Pineda Covalin ∼ Fashion As Art

Pineda Covalin was established in Mexico City by Christina Pineda and Ricardo Covalin in 1996. Their founding mission was to make fashion products celebrating Mexican heritage and folkloric traditions. Pineda Covalin’s designs are inspired by Mexican indigenous and ethnic art, portraying the diversity of the country’s rich history and peoples. Their men and women’s fine clothing and fashion accessories feature stylized decoration in striking colors representing cultural elements. One popular motif is the monarch butterflies that migrate to Mexico each fall, filling the skies and covering trees with their brilliant hues of orange and black. Often the same design is offered in various color combinations, and the same item, a scarf for example, is offered in various sizes and shapes. Pineda Covalin produces myriad dazzling items: Silk scarves (like the one pictured above) and shawls, ties and pocket squares, hand bags and clutches, jewelry, sunglasses, belts and face masks. Their designs incorporate ancient cultural and religious iconography from the Day of the Dead, Huichol, Otomi, and other ancestral themes. Today Pineda Covalin has boutiques in the Mexico City International Airport and throughout Mexico, as well as in the U.S. As both wearable and functional art – their scarves and ladies’ jackets, for example, are also suitable for framing. Their luxurious stylishness is highly recognizable, their high prices are commensurate with their beauty, quality and desirability.
