RaCe (pronounced Rah-Say) was born Raul Cedillo in Mexico City. Now in his ninth decade of life, he had a long, successful career as a book and magazine designer and illustrator, as well as in printing and advertising, for over 40 years. His atelier was in Colonia Roma where his brand flourished at the center of the Mexico City art milieu. After retiring from operating his workshop, he began to paint for pure enjoyment, quickly finding his own unmistakable vision combining bold, vibrant colors with elegant, fanciful designs, and featuring stylized human and animal forms. His painting style reflects at once a juxtaposition of sophistication and innocence. It is my great hope that his paintings will one day be recognized and appreciated by many. RaCe is an unknown national treasure, a Mexican Grand Master waiting to be discovered! Here is where I must disclose our familial connection: He is my father-in-law, and I am – fervently and unapologetically! – one of his biggest fans.
